Recovery
Recovery after a stem cell transplant looks different for everyone, but there are key milestones your care team will watch for. These signs show that your body is stabilizing and beginning to heal.
What Recovery May Include:
Taking medications by mouth: Transitioning off IV medications is a sign your digestive system is working well
Stopping TPN (total parenteral nutrition): If you’ve been receiving nutrition through an IV, being able to eat and absorb food again is a major step
Stable organ function: Your team will monitor your liver, kidneys, lungs, and heart to make sure they’re recovering from treatment
Improved blood counts: A sign that your new stem cells are working
Fewer transfusions: Needing fewer blood or platelet transfusions means your body is producing its own cells
A strong support system: Emotional and practical support from caregivers, family, and friends is essential for healing
Recovery is gradual. Some days will feel better than others, and that’s normal. Your care team will guide you through each phase and help you adjust medications, nutrition, and routines as needed.
